Recruiting

My Girlfriend is in the Property Management field. She was reviewing resumes last night and showed me one that had a cover letter that filled up an entire page. It was a nice resume but the clutter was a turn off. Based on the field that one is applying for, the resume is or isn't an important tool. If you are applying to become an Investment Banker, it is all about the resume and education. In Real Estate, the resume doesn't play a large role.

The difference is that Realtors are Independent Contractors. Real Estate Companies are always hiring. Why? Because the cost to carry an Independent Contractor is very different than paying someone a weekly salary to do a job. The old adage of you need to interview them as much as they are interviewing still applies...even more so in real Estate!

Setting yourself apart from the clutter means that first, you have done your homework. You are able to answer questions about the company you are meeting with. Excuses that you didn't have time or simply didn't care enough to do some research doesn't make you look very good to the interviewer. Second, You need to decide if the location, the office and the people you come in contact with are people that you want to work with on a daily basis. If not, don't waste your time or the companies.

This process can be a fun one. It all depends on what you tell yourself and where your head is. When i was a kid, I would run to the drug store to buy candy. If I was buying a lot of candy, it was embarrassing. So I would pretend (out loud) that i was buying for more than just myself. My head told me that I shouldn't be buying more than 1 candy bar (In this case, 5). Years later when I was buying candy for a training class (honest), my head was in a different place. There was no embarrassment because I knew that it really was for a class!

If you tell yourself that applying for a job is a fun process, it will be! After all, you are entering a business that is all about people. Just don't tell the Interviewer that you are a "people person"...even if you are. (we hear it all the time)
