Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...

Whether you are being interviewed or conducting the interview, there has been much written about the technique called "Mirroring". Mirroring calls for you to very subtlety match the body movements of the person you are speaking to. It is designed to put them at ease and make them more comfortable with you. This sounds like it makes sense. If they put their hand on their head or cross their arms, you should too. What a concept. But what if you are not good at it? What if you are not subtle and they catch you? What if they stopped the interview and ask you straight out, "Are you mirroring me?" Then what do you do? It is actually a funny concept.

I would much prefer looking around at the person's office, the way they are dressed and finding something to comment on to bond the two of you together. This also has to be done carefully but by expressing interest in someone, it usually makes them open up to you a bit more.

Tessa Stowe from SalesConversation.com says that Mirroring can do more harm than good. She says, "If you are focusing on mirroring someone's body language or style, then you are obviously not focusing on them." and "People will intuitively pick up if you are mirroring them and will know you're not being authentic."

These skills that you learn in a job interview are the same skills that can be used when going on a listing appointment. These practiced tools will assist you in becoming an excellent Realtor. At Real Living Real Estate Solutions, we provide training to agents of all levels in order to give them the tools and confidence to get the job done!

Being a good interviewer or interviewee all comes down to personality and qualifications. Do your homework and make sure that you are knowledgeable about the company, person or the job description.
